Finding Jobs Online

The internet is an extremely powerful job search tool. It allows you to quickly and easily search for job openings literally in any field or profession and located anywhere in the world. There is so much information available online, in fact, that it's easy to feel a bit lost or unsure about how to make best use of it.

Let's look at a few key ideas you can use to maximize your online job search.

Decide How You Want To Search

There are many different ways to search for a job online, such as:

  • By job title
  • By profession
  • By location
  • By job classification (full time, part time, temporary, permanent, etc.)
  • By company
  • By industry
  • By minimum qualifications
  • By certification
  • By level of education

So how do you decide which way is best for you? The answer really depends on your job search needs and goals. If you are looking for a similar job at a different company, you might search by job title; if you are looking for an entirely different job in a new discipline, you might search by profession or by industry. Most of the major job search websites allow you to search in one or more of these ways, allowing you to easily access those listings that are most likely to be of interest to you.

Finding Job Banks and Job Search Websites

There are hundreds, if not thousands, of job banks and job search websites online. You are probably familiar with some of the major sites such as Monster.com, CareerBuilder.com, and Dice.com; these are all good places to start your job search but should only be the starting point.

Look also for online job sites designed to serve a smaller 'niche' target group of jobs. For instance, there are sites specializing in engineering; marketing/public relations; accounting; administrative/clerical; and many, many more. Some of these are stand alone sites, while others are hosted within another website related to the particular job specialty. A good place to start is to find the website for a professional association related to your job field; chances are the association also hosts a job board of some sort for their members to post open positions.

There are many geographical job banks online as well. Some are based on a particular region of the country, while others are even more specialized and focused on a particular city, county, or state. If you are looking in a specific city or county, for example, start with the website of the newspaper(s) serving that area. They typically have online classified ads, but more importantly they many times host a more comprehensive job bank website as well. Local Chambers of Commerce are also good resources to check, because many allow member businesses to post job openings on the Chamber website.
